Looking at the new CW TVD posters with Elena, Stefan and Damon, there’s something really interesting that we should take notice of.
First, Elena’s poster is showing her with a rope tying her hands together with blood oozing from her wrists (I think). At the very bottom of the poster, it says “Tenetur Fer Sanguinem”, which is Latin for “Bound By Blood”.

Then, we look at Stefan’s poster which shows him holding two keys in his hand. At the bottom of Stefan’s poster, it says “A Venit Honos Salutem”, which is Latin for “From Honor Comes Salvation” (clearly this line represents Stefan’s heroism, selflessness and noble qualities).

Finally, we have Damon’s poster, which pictures him with blood all over his hands. At the bottom of Damon’s poster, it says in Latin “Sanguinis Est Reatus”, which means “Blood Is Guilt”.

Now that I have described all three posters, I’m going to give my own interpretation on the meaning of them. The rope around Elena’s wrist represents her being bound by Damon’s blood. It is Damon’s blood that transformed her into the one thing she never wanted to be, a vampire. Then we have Damon with blood smeared all over his hands. This clearly means that Damon is responsible for Elena’s “death” as a human because his blood is pumping through her undead body. Damon’s blood is the reason she is now a monster. Now, the most interesting and important one is Stefan and I really observed the true meaning behind Stefan’s poster. As you can see, Stefan is holding not one, but two keys in his hand. Again, look at Elena’s hands, they are bound together with a large rope. The way I interpret Stefan’s poster is that one key that Stefan is holding represents setting Elena free. one of the key’s Stefan is holding represents freedom for Elena or Stefan somehow setting Elena free. The rope around Elena’s hands represents being held captive, being stuck, being a prisoner. And the key(s) in Stefan’s hands represents free will, freedom, liberty and choice. In laymen’s terms, if you put together Stefan and Elena’s posters and their symbolisms and meanings, it is basically saying “Stefan will set Elena free”, or even “Stefan represent’s Elena’s freedom”. Bottom line is, I feel that somehow, Stefan will end up saving Elena in a very big way somehow by the end of this season. I think he (Stefan) will do everything in his power to try to turn Elena back into a human, ultimately saving her from the one thing she (Elena) never wanted to be. Will that take some possible sacrifices on behalf of Stefan? Most definitely? After all, if you look at Stefan’s Latin phrase on his poster “From Honour Comes Salvation”, that phrase clearly represents courage, self sacrifice, altruism, nobleness and heroism. Also, I would like to remind you again, that Stefan is holding TWO KEYS. I feel that one key represents freeing Elena and the other key represents freeing Stefan himself (from guilt). Again, this is just my interpretation on these posters.
